French Foreign Minister Alain Juppé said Tuesday that Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s aides have hinted that the leader is ready to step down after 41 years in power, but warned there have been no official talks yet. Juppé said Gaddafi has dispatched envoys to several cities, including Ankara and New York, to have “contact” with officials. On Tuesday, the French Parliament voted to extend NATO’s participation in the airstrikes against Libya, but France’s talks with Libyan officials risked causing a split within NATO. U.S. State Department officials said the messages coming from Gaddafi were “contradictory.”
