In his homily Sunday to begin the eagerly-anticipated two-week synod on Catholic life, Pope Francis asked bishops "to work generously with authentic freedom and humble creativity." While conservatives are looking to the synod to reinforce existing Church doctrine on sexual matters, many see it as an opening for the Church to soften on issues of birth control, divorce, and gay marriage.
