Paul and Rachel Chandler, the British couple who have been freed by Somali pirates after more than a year, said Monday they had just learned that Paul Chandler's father died in July while they were still in captivity. In a statement, the couple thanked everyone for their concern and requested privacy during their time of grief. They were the longest-held captives of Somali pirates, who originally asked for nearly $7 million in ransom for the couple. According to news reports, the two were released after the Somali government and private investors likely paid a ransom totaling about $700,000.
