Rebel forces are locked in battle with Gaddafi's tanks, planes, and militias for control of the town of Zawiyah, 30 miles from Tripoli. Rebels beat back an assault early Saturday morning, which according to one doctor said left 30 people dead, but quickly found themselves facing a second one. Gaddafi's forces are shelling houses and mosques, according to a witness, and a Sky News reporter says Gaddafi's forces are firing on ambulances. The rebels met with clearer success in the eastern town of Ras Lanuf, a central oil port. Rebels say Gaddafi's forces fled after hours of fighting that left dozens dead on both sides. Rebels also captured the town of Bin Jawad and were moving on toward Sirte, Gaddafi's heavily guarded hometown. Back in Tripoli, protesters continue to challenge Gaddafi despite his increasingly brutal response.
