Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has reportedly fled Libya for Niger in what an official of Libya’s National Transitional Council claims is the late dictator's son's attempt to turn himself into the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The official said Saif did not want to die fighting, as his father and three of his brothers did, although he proclaimed loudly in February that “we fight here in Libya; we die here in Libya” after the rebellion against Gaddafi broke out. Saif was an internationally well-connected philanthropist and liberal reformer before he became a soldier ready to defend his father—in death, or maybe not. The Gaddafi family plans to file a war crimes complaint against NATO at the ICC—the same charge for which Saif is wanted.
