‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 Premiere Destroys Ratings Records

Over 17 million people reportedly watched the Game of Thrones season premiere on Sunday evening, making the episode HBO’s “biggest telecast” in its history. According to Entertainment Weekly, the first episode of the show’s eighth and final season had 17.4 million people tuning in and became TV’s “most-watched scripted entertainment program” of 2019—beating The Big Bang Theory’s audience of 14.1 million viewers. The final numbers reportedly don’t include the audiences from certain streaming partners—like Amazon, Hulu, and Roku—which could make the actual audience number larger than calculated. The episode, titled “Winterfell,” racked up 5 million tweets and broke a Twitter record for the show.
