At least 25 people were killed and 259 were injured in Taiwan on Thursday night when a series of explosions tore through the city of Kaohsiung. The underground explosions in what is Taiwan’s second-largest city kicked off fires that tore off manhole covers, deep craters were seen in many roads, and the damage flipped and wrecked cars. An initial investigation indicated a probable leak in an underground pipeline that transports propene, a flammable petrochemical for polyesters. Four of the dead were firefighters.
