As clashes erupted on Friday between pro- and anti-government demonstrators in Bahrain’s predominately Sunni Riffa area, and tension mounted in the Saudi capital of Riyadh after reports that shots were fired near Shiite protesters in the eastern part of the country, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is headed to Bahrain, Yahoo’s The Envoy reports. Gates' trip was unannounced, and the tiny Persian Gulf nation of Bahrain is home to the U.S. fifth fleet. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to visit Egypt and Tunisia next week, the State Department announced Thursday. Clinton will also meet with representatives for the Libyan opposition on her trip.
