The International Criminal Court charged Laurent Gbagbo, the former Ivory Coast leader, with murder, rape, and inhuman acts Wednesday. Gbagbo was arrested after trying to cling to power last year. He is the first head of state taken into custody by the ICC since its creation in 2002, and is charged as an “indirect perpetrator” of violence against his opponent’s supporters. In The Hague, he will share a cell block with former Liberian strongman Charles Taylor, who is awaiting his verdict from a tribunal.
