When the media began taking notice of George Zimmerman and the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the Zimmerman family decided the best response was to stock up on guns. In an interview with GQ, the family reveals that they armed themselves and took on various disguises. Grace, George’s younger sister, screamed, “We need to get guns!” when she saw the first news reports on her brother. Robert Zimmerman Jr., George’s brother, said he still sleeps with a gun. The family now lives in a cheap, isolated house they found on Craigslist after they were worried vigilantes would track them down. The extremely paranoid family also developed a special security system: “Code blue: Law enforcement at the door. Code brown: Draw your weapons. Code black: Come out guns blazing.”
