Georgia’s Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp said Thursday that he’s resigning as secretary of state. The announcement comes after Kemp declared victory in Georgia’s governor race, which remains too close to officially call. Kemp’s opponent, Democrat Stacey Abrams, told reporters on Wednesday that she will not concede the election and is considering legal action to make sure all votes have been counted. As of Thursday morning, Kemp had a narrow lead over Abrams. Meanwhile, an Atlanta federal court hearing was held Thursday morning on a lawsuit from Georgia residents who are trying to bar Kemp from having any involvement in overseeing the election results. Kemp’s resignation is effective as of 11:59 a.m.
