Giffords Shows 'Glimmers of Recognition'

RECOVERY

Doctor: Eye movements promising.

Some good news: U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ doctor said the congresswoman is showing “glimmers of recognition” less than a week after being shot in the head. “That tracking of the eyes tells you a whole lot more, that she’s aware of her surroundings to some extent,” Dr. Michael Lemole told CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Giffords opened her eyes for the first time Wednesday while her husband, her parents, and members of Congress were in the room, and she continued to open them Thursday. Giffords’ husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, said he thought his wife realized President Obama had visited her Wednesday. Doctors said the next step in Giffords’ recovery will be removing her breathing tube, and they said she is already undergoing physical therapy and can move her legs. “Miracles happen every day,” Lemole said. “A lot of medicine is outside our control.”
