Giffords Smiles, Gives Back Rub

Where does “back rub” fall on the path to recovery? Rep. Gabrielle Giffords smiled and reportedly gave her husband a back rub after a successful surgery to remove bone chips from her eye socket. News of the smile came from Giffords’ husband, and while a doctor warned that sometimes people mistake such gestures, “If he says she’s smiling, I buy it.” Giffords still cannot speak because she has a tube in her throat that is helping her breathe. She also had a feeding tube inserted on Saturday. Giffords could be released in "days or weeks," a hospital official said.
