Doctors gave Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her supporters a beacon of hope Tuesday, rating her chances of survival at “101 percent.” Giffords has a long, unpredictable recovery ahead of her, but doctors say they are confident that she will not die from the traumatic gunshot wound to the head that she received in Saturday’s shooting rampage. “I have a lot of confidence that she’ll recover,” her doctor Peter Rhee said, while noting that usually the odds are “abysmal” that such patients do so. He credited in part the rapid response of emergency personnel, who were at the scene within 14 minutes of the shooting.
