An 11th-hour poll places Gingrich at 40 percent among likely Republican voters in South Carolina, leading Romney at 26 percent and Paul in third at 18 percent. Rick Santorum, who has tried to consolidate support from the evangelical community over the past week, trailed with a meager 13 percent of likely voters. Gingrich has leapt 7 points from a survey conducted just days ago. All signs are that the race for frontrunner is tight as evening settles in South Carolina – but the state is notoriously unpredictable.
