After suffering days of criticism for calling for a “humane” immigration policy during the last Republican debate, Newt Gingrich once again stated his opposition to amnesty and said most illegal immigrants should leave the country and reapply for citizenship. "I am not for amnesty for anyone. I am not for a path to citizenship for anybody who got here illegally," Gingrich told a crowd of about 750 people on Friday. Instead, he said he's proposing a “certification of legality with no right to vote and no right to become an American citizen unless they go home" and reapply to become a citizen.
