Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) will not seek reelection at the end of the year, he announced Monday. Royce, a Republican representing the slightly conservative Orange County, currently chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee; he has served in the House since 1993. Royce’s district voted solidly Democratic during the 2016 presidential election, with Hillary Clinton winning the district by 8.6 points, suggesting a leftward swing in his district could have put his seat in danger anyhow.
