Republican Sens. Rob Portman of Ohio and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania readied their states for the president’s upcoming visits this week with a memo on Obama’s “middle-class promise gap.” The memo, released through Romney’s campaign, attacks Obama for falling short on “nearly every critical issue of the day.” Portman and Toomey also cite Obama’s knowledge of his own shortcomings and the effect this will have as he seeks reelection. The senators claim that the president’s campaign ads skew statistics and misconstrue Romney’s record. Despite such efforts, Obama leads 47 percent to 38 percent in Ohio and 45 percent to 39 percent in Pennsylvania.
