GOP Senators Hint at DADT Repeal

Equal Rights

Ensign, Murkowski appear ready to let gays serve.

This doesn’t bode well for John McCain’s threatened filibuster: Republican Senators John Ensign of Nevada and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska have hinted that they’ll support a repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. “It is my firm belief that Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation, should be able to fight and risk their lives in defense of this great nation," Ensign wrote in a letter to constituents, though he adds he wants to wait for the Pentagon’s December report on the policy, which will show overwhelming support within the Armed Forces for a repeal. Murkowski also told a reporter that she would “not vote against a bill that had that repeal in it.”
