A Republican congressional staffer is stepping down after she caught major flak for her disparaging remarks about President Obama’s daughters. Elizabeth Lauten, who served as communications director for Rep. Stephen Lee Fincher of Tennessee, posted on Facebook last week that Sasha and Malia should “try showing a little class and “dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar.” Her post was prompted by a photo of the girls at the annual presidential turkey pardoning. “After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents, and re-reading my words online I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were,” Lauten wrote after the backlash.
