New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday declared a “state of emergency” for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the public corporation responsible for NYC’s mass-transit system. “We are now beginning to see what happens when mass transit systems break down,” the governor said. The emergency declaration allows the state to expedite the allocation of funding and the initiation of repairs for the system that has been hampered by delays, derailments, and power outages over the past several months. As part of his pledge to fix the system, Cuomo announced an additional $1 billion in funding for the MTA.
