The esteemed graphic designer Louise Fili became infatuated with Italian street signs when she first visited Italy as a 16-year-old teenager, and the love affair has only intensified with many return visits. Included here are selections from her new book, Grafica Della Strada: The Signs of Italy, and examining them you wonder how people tear their eyes away long enough to go into a store and shop. So much beauty, all in the name of commerce, out there as a free gift to every pedestrian. You don’t even have to know what the words mean to understand that the Italians know what to do with an alphabet.
