Massimo Vignelli seemed to have his artistic hands in everything. The designer known for a modernist rendering of New York's subway map, National Park Service brochures, St. Peter's Lutheran Church pews, and bags designed for Bloomingdale's, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Barneys, died on Tuesday at age 83. Vignelli, originally from Italy, was known for blending aesthetics with functionality and his work is displayed in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and others across the world.
