Greece Asks for €279B Nazi Reparations

Bigger than owed debt.

Greece is pursuing an innovative strategy to dig itself out of its deep debt hole: It’s demanding €279 billion (about $303 billion) in World War II reparations for suffering and occupation from Germany, a sum bigger than the bailout it faces today. About 40,000 people died in Athens alone during its 1941 Nazi occupation. The sum is also an increase from Greece’s previous reparations demands, which topped out at around €160 billion.
