Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soared to the top of the box office in its opening weekend, raking in $145 million in domestic ticket sales. The sequel by director James Gunn also managed to open 54 percent higher than the first film, which was released in 2014. In its second weekend in theaters overseas, the Marvel sequel brought in $282.6 million, bringing the global total to a whopping $427.6 million. The film sees Chris Pratt joined by Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and Karen Gillan as he reprises the role of Star-Lord/Peter Quill to battle evil forces and figure out his true parentage. Elizabeth Debicki, Kurt Russell, and Sylvester Stallone also join the team in the second installment of the franchise. The Fate of the Furious claimed second place with $8.5 million in domestic ticket sales.
