The United Nations General Assembly has officially elected former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres as its next secretary-general, a week after he was nominated for the role by the Security Council. Guterres, 67, will succeed Ban Ki-moon as the leader of the 193-member body on Jan. 1, when the latter’s five-year term is complete. He served as PM from 1995 to 2002, and for 10 years was the UN high commissioner for refugees. In Portugal, he was a member of the Socialist Party.
