Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Saturday that “considerable progress” has been made in convincing Turkey to join the fight against ISIS. The U.S. is trying to convince Turkey to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels inside Turkey’s borders, similar to the rebel training set to occur in Saudi Arabia. Officials from the U.S. European Command and U.S. Central Command will arrive in Turkey this week to discuss details, Hagel added. John K. Allen, the special envoy coordinating the U.S.-led effort against ISIS, is also talking to other Arab partners about adopting the training program as well.
