The hit Broadway musical Hamilton won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, making it only the ninth musical ever to win the prestigious award. The theater sensation created by Lin-Manuel Miranda looked like an early favorite for the award due to its immense popularity and game-changing use of hip hop music to tell a historical narrative. The most recent musicals to receive this award were 2010's Next to Normal and 1996's Rent.
