'Hangover 2' Breaks Box Office Records and 'Kung Fu Panda 2' Does Well

Has the largest R-rated comedy opening ever.

The Hangover Part 2 had the largest-grossing R-rated comedy opening in history on Thursday. The sequel earned $31.6 million on Thursday, including $10.4 million from midnight shows. The previous record holder was Sex and the City, which earned $26.7 million on its opening day. The film is expected to earn between $80 million and $85 million over the three-day weekend and $125 million over the five-day Memorial Day holiday. The weekend’s other big release, Kung Fu Panda 2 debuted at $6 million on Thursday and is on track to make $45 million to $50 million over the weekend and about $65 million over the five-day holiday.
