Harvey Released 2 Million Pounds of Pollutants From Refineries, Plants
IN THE AIR
Hurricane Harvey may have caused the release of as much as 2 million pounds of pollutants from manufacturing plants and oil refineries in the Houston area, according to regulatory findings. The report, submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, specifically cites potentially hazardous airborne pollutants exceeding legal limits. It’s still unclear how many contaminants were released because monitoring stations for air quality were shut down before Harvey made landfall. Still, the facilities and oil refineries will be required to file emissions reports that estimate the amount of contaminants released. Those reports are due within two weeks.
