Sleep apnea and other sleep disorders may have more potential consequences than previously thought: On top of well-established links to heart disease and stroke, the condition may put sufferers at a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease. In a study out of New York University’s medical school, those with sleep disorders experienced memory loss a decade before their peers, and an Alzheimer’s diagnosis five years earlier. Scientists hypothesize that it’s either the breathing stoppage or sleep disruption that’s affecting cognitive abilities. On the bright side, intervention with CPAP machines has shown positive results.
