Nashville police say a 29-year-old man is to thank for preventing more deaths in a fatal Waffle House shooting Sunday morning. James Shaw Jr. suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including a minor gunshot wound, when he rushed the gunman, disarmed him, and threw his rifle over the restaurant’s counter, a police spokesman said. The suspected gunman, identified by police as Illinois resident Travis Reinking, was thought to have been reloading his “assault-type rifle” when Shaw Jr. tackled him. Police later found additional ammunition cartridges in the jacket the suspected shooter left behind. But Shaw Jr. says he doesn’t think of himself as a hero. “I don’t really know, when everyone said that, it feels selfish,” he was quoted as saying by The Tennessean. “I was just trying to get myself out. I saw the opportunity and pretty much took it,” he said. Police are still searching for Reinking, who allegedly opened fire on restaurant customers while semi-nude Sunday, killing four and injuring several others before Shaw Jr. disarmed him. Police say he was known to law enforcement from “previous interactions” in other cities.
