A 65-year-old woman plunged to her death while hiking the Alum Cave Trail in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The woman, whose identity has not been released, fell Saturday at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is located along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. Rangers responded to the accident, but “attempts to resuscitate the individual were unsuccessful,” according to park officials. The park has been ranked as one of the most dangerous national parks in the country over the last decade. Data compiled by the National Park Service found 104 people died in the park between 2013 and 2023—the fourth highest total nationwide. “Backcountry travel has inherent risks, and hikers assume complete responsibility for their own safety. Rescue is not a certainty. Always practice good judgment,” the National Park Service advises Smoky Mountain hikers.

Heavy internet users are less committed to the idea of democracy, a new poll has found. A Gallup and Charles F. Kettering Foundation survey published Tuesday revealed that only 57 percent of heavy social media users support democracy, compared to 72 percent of non-users. Federal prosecutors have charged a longtime Republican campaign treasurer in Maryland with diverting funds for personal use—including the purchase of a fancy yacht. A routine day on the water turned abruptly surreal for a windsurfer who collided with a whale. A fight over an unpaid carry-on ended with three women being carted off a plane in handcuffs. The trio ended up in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Deputies said the disruption held up the flight for about an hour.
