According to a study published on Tuesday, 70 percent of Americans with HIV are either undiagnosed or no longer receiving treatment. Currently, more than a million people in the United States have HIV. Twenty percent have been undiagnosed, and fewer than three in 10 who have the immunodeficiency virus, which leads to AIDS, have the virus under control. Sixty-six percent of the diagnosed are no longer receiving treatment. “Key to controlling the nation’s HIV epidemic is helping people with HIV get connected to—and stay in—care and treatment,” CDC Director Tom Frieden said in a statement, “to surpass the virus, live longer, and help protect others.” Antiretroviral medication helps suppress the virus from developing and spreading and prevents the likelihood of passing it to others.
