Richard Holbrooke, the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, remains in critical condition after surgery on Sunday to repair a torn aorta. The surgery, which was his second, was meant to improve circulation. “He had an aortic bleed, and many people would have succumbed to that,” David Axelrod said Sunday. “Richard is fighting through it.” Holbrooke’s illness comes right before President Obama is set to release an assessment of Af/Pak strategy.
