In the revolving door that is Francois Hollande’s circle, the French president's former partner Segolene Royal has joined his government as environment minister after a reshuffling of the Socialist Party. The news comes after months of speculation leading to a split between Hollande and his most recent partner, Valerie Trierweiler, after reports of his alleged affair with an actress. Royal, who is the mother to four of Hollande’s children, has her own political history and was the Socialist candidate for the 2007 presidential election when she lost to Nicolas Sarkozy.
