Despite the debuts of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, this weekend’s box office was behind the same weekend in 2010. The box office was also down for the fourth week in a row, with the top 12 movies earning 13 percent less than last year. The Sherlock Holmes sequel took first place with just $40 million, compared to its predecessor’s $62.3 million opening weekend. While Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked took in just $23.5 million—the previous Chipmunks sequel earned $48.9 million its first weekend. Some good news—Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol took in $13 million from only 425 theaters.
