The Department of Defense has received a request from the Department of Homeland Security to “house and care for an alien family population of up to 12,000 people,” according to a DoD release. DHS requested housing for 2,000 people within 45 days, and requested military facilities in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, or California “enable access to and supervision of the sites.” Where no facilities are available, the DHS is asking for the construction of “semi-separate, soft-sided camp facilities” on DoD land. The request comes as the Department of Health and Human Services inspector general announced that they would inspect all facilities holding migrant children who have been separated from their parents.
