Hong Kong protesters aren’t showing any signs of stopping, despite a call from Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying to “stop this campaign immediately.” Leung slammed the protests and denied any concessions to demonstrators. “The central government will not change its mind as a result of such tactics,” he said. However, the thousands of students, trade unionists, social workers, and even some business executives are undeterred. “We don’t see the need to stop the movement,” said protest organizer Chin Kin-Man. “Stopping it is in the hands of the government; it’s up to the government to listen to the people.” The mass pro-democracy protests have raised fears in Beijing that the unrest could spread to the mainland, but there are also fears China could resort to marital law.
