A new Food and Drug Administration inquiry centers on whether hand santizers used by hospitals are safe—and even whether they actually work. It set a deadline of 2018 for manufacturers to provide data on safety, efficacy, and whether overuse of these products may lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Those that don’t meet standards by 2018 will be removed from the market.
