Dwayne Johnson was passed up in favor of monsters in theaters this weekend, as Skyscraper proved to be no match for Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. Hotel Transylvania 3, an animated family film from Sony featuring the voices of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, and Andy Samberg, opened to $44 million domestically, easily winning first place. The film scored the second-best opening for the franchise, topping the original 2012 film’s $42 million. Despite Johnson’s star power, the action flick Skyscraper fell short of expectations in its opening weekend, earning $25 million and failing to top holdover Ant-Man and the Wasp. Skyscraper took third place, while Marvel’s Ant-Man sequel stayed strong in second with $29.5 million.
