House Passes Credit Card Reforms

On the Hill

Bill now awaits Obama's signature.

Free credit cards for everyone! Okay, not quite, but today the House passed sweeping new rules for the credit card industry 361-94, a day after the Senate passed the same measure with 90 votes. “The new restrictions will protect debt-ridden consumers from many of the surprise charges common in the industry, like over-the-limit fees and a charge to pay the bill by phone,” according to the Associated Press. Sorry kids: “People under 21 also will find it difficult to get a card.” According to White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, President Obama will sign the bill as soon as possible.
