The Department of Housing and Urban Development’s assistant secretary resigned Friday after Secretary Ben Carson announced, apparently incorrectly, that she would be leaving to serve as acting Inspector General at the Interior Department. Suzanne Tufts’ resignation comes one day after the Interior Department denied that she would be replacing the current IG, Mary Kendall. A senior adviser to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke noted that “HUD sent out an email that had false information in it.” Carson’s email to HUD wishing Tufts a “fond farewell” was leaked earlier this week and broke the news of the supposed staffing change. Tufts’ position as a Trump political appointee, and her lack of oversight experience, reportedly concerned watchdog groups and those on Capitol Hill. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is currently facing a number of Inspector General investigations, including over real-estate and casino deals and his travel expenses.
