Human-Rights Workers Vanish in Qatar

MYSTERY

Investigating slave labor by government.

Two British human-rights investigators looking into the plight of migrant laborers working on Qatar’s massive 2022 World Cup construction project have disappeared in the Gulf state. Krishna Upadhyaya and Ghimire Gundev, who work for a Norwegian charity, vanished Sunday afternoon after they texted colleagues that they were being followed by plainclothes police officers. They also texted that they feared they would be arrested that day as they tried to fly out of Qatar. The wealthy Gulf nation has been heavily criticized for its treatment of its 1.4 million migrant workers, many of whom are helping the country in its rush to build infrastructure ahead of the global soccer tournament.
