Jon Huntsman told his campaign aides late Sunday that he will drop his bid for the 2012 Republican nomination on Monday—and will endorse Mitt Romney. Huntsman's campaign manager said that Huntsman "decided it was time for Republicans to rally around a candidate who could beat Barack Obama and turn around the economy ... and that candidate is Mitt Romney." The former Utah governor had long been considered a long shot for the Republican nomination, and came in third place in the New Hampshire primary—but it was not enough to propel his campaign to the forefront. Huntsman’s campaign faced low funds and was polling behind Stephen Colbert in South Carolina.
