Christine Lagarde, the head of the IMF, has been placed under formal investigation by French magistrates for her alleged role in a political fraud case. She had originally been questioned as a witness in the inquiry into Bernard Tapie that has affected several members of former President Nicolas Sarkozy’s cabinet. Lagarde reportedly considers their decision to investigate her for “negligence” unfounded and will appeal. The issue involves Tapie receiving 403 million euros in an arbitration payment during Sarkozy’s presidency while Lagarde was finance minister. Tapie was a big Sarkozy supporter.
