Immigration Protests Expected Across U.S.

MAY DAY

As outrage deepens over Arizona law.

The theme for protests this May Day is very much immigration. A week after Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed the controversial immigration bill into law, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to demonstrate against it in over 70 cities across the country. The law, which requires police to check people’s immigration status, has been widely viewed as racist and sparked outrage among Hispanic organizations. The biggest protest is expected to be in downtown Los Angeles where Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has said, "The Arizona law is not only misguided, it is unpatriotic and unconstitutional." In other fallout from the bill, Major League Baseball officials are being urged to stand up for their contingent of immigrant players by stripping Arizona of the 2011 All-Star game.
