Riots that started in India Saturday night escalated to the point of government intervention on Sunday. The violence began in the Muzaffarnagar district after a meeting of thousands of Hindu farmers was held to demand justice for three men who were killed for speaking up against the harassment of a woman. Some speeches were also reportedly given advocating the killing of Muslims. After the meeting, the farmers were attacked, sparking riots between area Hindus and Muslims that lasted until Sunday. Hundreds of troops were deployed to get the rioters under control, but not before nine people were killed. The situation is reportedly now under control.
