India’s cabinet has prescribed the death penalty for those convicted of sexually assaulting children under the age of 12 after accusations the government wasn’t doing enough to combat sexual violence. Those convicted of raping children under the age of 16 will also face harsher punishment. The move comes after a spate of brutal sexual attacks on young girls, including a high-profile case in which an 8-year-old girl was raped and murdered. Amid growing outrage over the matter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called an emergency meeting of his cabinet, where an executive order amending the criminal law to allow for the death penalty was approved. It will now be sent to the president for approval.
