The head of a drug-manufacturing company and his son have been arrested on suspicion of destroying evidence tied to the deaths of 14 women who underwent sterilizations. “Ramesh Mahawar, the director of Mahawar Pharma, and his son have been arrested,” said police superintendent Om Prakash. According to police, after they visited the two at their plant two days ago, neighbors witnessed smoke rising from the building as they burned medicine inside. On Thursday, more women came forward claiming sickness after using the same antibiotics as those used in a village in which multiple women died from the procedure. The new women had not had sterilizations and had consumed the drugs separately. One of them died overnight.
